Gary W. Hilborn - Artistic & Managing Director, The Southern Theatre Company

The Southern Theatre Company is a New York-based performing arts organization dedicated to celebrating the diversity of Southern writers and Southern stories.

I first got the ball rolling on this company in early 2013, and with each passing day I grow more and more excited about the work we're setting out to do. As someone who was born and raised in Louisiana and who has lived in Manhattan since 2001, I often describe myself as having a New York mind and a Southern soul. I have a foot firmly planted in two worlds, and I deeply love both my homes.

Our country is an increasingly fractured place, and I wholeheartedly believe we have a chance to heal it if we connect over our shared hopes, dreams, and hurts - perhaps, especially our hurts.

At The Southern, I'm applying the knowledge and skills I've acquired over thirty years of working in the theatre to the development of new plays by emerging writers and playwrights who share a deep affection for the South. In addition to the diverse stories of the new South, I'm also excited to tackle those classic Southern titles we know and love with a fresh perspective and emphasis on inclusivity.

In the coming weeks and months, there will be plenty of new developments to report and opportunities for you to help us fulfill our mission. In the meantime, I invite you to follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook where you will be able to get a better feel for who we are and what we're planning to do here at TSTC.

And if you’d like to be included on our mailing list, please drop me a line at garyhilborn@thesoutherntheatre.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,

Gary W. Hilborn
